This volume follows the steamboat Explorer and its hitherto virtually known engineer from Philadelphia to its resassembly on the Río Colorado delta, and the expedition upriver to Black Canyon. It presents for the first time a narrative employing the publications of both Balduin Möllhausen (in English translation) and Lt. J. C. Ives. Includes transcriptions from the “General Report” of Lt. Joseph C. Ives’ Report Upon the Colorado River of the West (Washington, 1861) and translations from Balduin Mollhausen’s Reisen in die Felsengebirge Nord-Amerikas bis zum Hoch-Plateau von Neu-Mexico (Leipzig, 1861).
